The case of an alleged Russian mole inside Germany’s intelligence service has raised alarms in Berlin, where Russia has long spied aggressively and may have assassinated a foe.

Als die Medienaufsicht NRW bekannt gab, dass sie bereit sind, bestimmte Pornoseiten zu sperren, wenn diese den Jugendschutz nicht einhalten, habe ich mit sechs Medienexpert:innen und Rechtswissenschaftler:innen gesprochen, um rauszufinden, welche Alternativen es zur verpflichtenden Altersverifikation gibt.

Für diese groß angelegte Datenanalyse, haben meine Kollegen und ich mehr als 100 Twitter Accounts der deutschen Polizei untersucht. Der Bayerische Journalisten Verband hat sie mit dem zweiten Platz des Preises zur Pressefreiheit ausgezeichnet.

I used R and Selenium to scrape Twitter accounts that is labeled as China state-affiliated on Twitter. With 401 accounts it is one of the most complete lists of Chinese officials on social media. You are welcome to use it, it’s available on DataHub.

In 2019, Chinese officials joined Twitter on a large scale, making China one of the world’s largest digital public diplomacy players. I used the Twitter API to visualize the network of follower/following relationships among Chinese diplomats, including gender and creation date.

This was one of the fastest feature stories I have written. I had done the research, conducted lots of interviews, and cross-checked the numbers. When I sat down to write the story, I knew exactly how I wanted to tell it.

For this piece, a colleague and I tracked down people affected by a new police custody rule. We used FOIA and parliamentary inquiries to compile a complete list of cases spanning several years, and were able to show that the law was primarily used against climate activists.

For this first-of-its-kind data analysis, my colleagues and I examined more than 100 Twitter accounts by German police. The Bavarian Journalist Association awarded it second place in its Price for Press Freedom. It also received the extra prize of the jury from the Surveillance Studies Network.

In one of my favorite interviews, I spoke to a woman whose teenage daughter died by suicide. It’s a thoughtful piece about digital mourning and the mother's perspective on Germany’s strict privacy laws.
